Apple Glass Expected to Begin Shipping by Late 2027: What to Know

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s anticipated smart glasses, dubbed Apple Glass, may finally debut in late 2027. This release has been a long-term topic of speculation, with many rumors surrounding its potential functionalities and design. Kuo provided updates on the development timeline and capabilities of these glasses in a recent post. The first iteration is expected to be simpler than initially envisioned.

Rather than focusing on augmented reality features, these smart glasses will reportedly not include a visual display but will emphasize audio playback and video recording functionalities. The design is thought to resemble Ray-Ban frames, integrating voice recognition and gesture controls via built-in cameras. These cameras are intended to support artificial intelligence by providing environmental sensing capabilities, enhancing the glasses’ ability to respond to user inquiries. Kuo mentioned that mass production of these glasses is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2027, with initial shipment projections ranging from three to five million units.

While he anticipates that Apple’s entry into the market will stimulate growth in demand for smart glasses and headsets, he also notes that rival companies may launch similar devices sooner than Apple. In addition to the simpler model, Kuo discusses a second type of eyewear referred to as “XR Glasses,” which is expected to feature a full-color Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) display. Mass production for these glasses is forecasted to commence in the second half of 2028, and they will also incorporate voice control and gesture recognition. Lastly, Kuo touched on a lesser-known project called the “Display Accessory.”

Initially thought to be shelved, this tethered display concept may still see the light of day. It is designed to connect to devices like Macs or iPhones, utilizing specialized optics to display images directly into the user’s view. Although briefly paused due to competitive concerns, a revival of this project remains possible, given Apple’s innovative track record.
